Minasama doshi hanashi kaketara, kokoro to kimochi wa atataku narimasu. Nihon go wa jozu denai kara Korekara Eiigo de Hanashimasu. I am honored and humbled to be selected by the Ryukyu Shimpo Board of Directors for the Ryukyu Shimpo award. The Ryukyu Shimpo have for many years written about worldwide Uchinanchu networking. I have been privileged to work on Uchinanchu networking projects with many groups and hundreds of people. The Ryukyu Shimpo award is recognition to these people. Hawaii Okinawa Center In 1987, the committee to build the Hawaii Okinawa Center was established by Ed Kuba, past president of the Hawaii Kenjin Kai, “Father of the Hawaii Okinawa Center”. He encouraged me to participate in this great project. I learned much from the enthusiasm of Ed Kuba and also John Tasato, a super volunteer, about the Uchinanchu spirit. Many in Okinawa helped us. The Okinawa Hawaii Association assisted us with their leaders, Nakamura Kamesuke, Oydomari Ichiro, Makiya Akira. In particular Oshiro Masayuki and Tamamori Terunobu, helped us tirelessly with many Okinawa-Hawaii projects. During our visits to Okinawa, we were told many many times about the Hawaii Issei’s post-war Okinawa relief effort to send clothes, medical and school supplies and even goats and pigs. Now, thanks to Okinawa’s support, the Hawaii Okinawa Center was successfully built with no debts in 1990. WUB In 1995, at the 2nd Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival’s Economic Forum, it was proposed that if the Chinese, Indians and Jews can build a worldwide network, then we, Uchinanchus worldwide can also do it. Inamine Keiichi was the forum chairman. In 1997 the East-West Center (EWC)- president Kenji Sumida, the Bank of the Ryukyus-President Sakima Akira, and Ryukyu Shimpo-President Miyazato Akira supported the 1st Worldwide Uchinanchu Business (WUB) conference in Hawaii. OTV Maehara Shinichi’s TV Uchinanchu worldwide programs also inspired us. Worldwide participants agreed to establish WUB. Goya Morimasa, Past WUB International President, Makishi Taizo, past WUB Okinawa president, and I traveled to many countries promoting this network and establishing many WUB Chapters. WUB now has 21 Chapters in 15 countries. EWC Obuchi Program From the beginning of the EWC in 1960, to 1972, the return of Okinawa to Japan, the EWC assisted Okinawa in the post-war development with many training and educational programs. Many distinguished and prominent leaders of Okinawa have gone to the EWC. The EWC Okinawa Alumni Chapter leaders, such as Takayama Choko and Teruya Fumio felt that the EWC experience was important to Okinawa and were able to persuade EWC President Charles Morrison to revitalize this program. In the year 2000, U.S. President Clinton at the Corner Stone of Peace just prior to the G-8 conference, announced the EWC Obuchi program. The program is now over 5 years old with 20 Obuchi Fellowship and 14 Obuchi Scholarship awards. (Tsuyaku san wa Yamazato Kinuko san wa ii rei desu. Kinuko san wa Obuchi no shogakin wo uketa hito, ima wa Hawaii Daigaku de hakasei go no benkyo wo shite imasu. Obuchi program no ii rei desu) University Relationship between the EWC, University of Hawaii (UH) and the University of the Ryukyus (UR) increased in the area of the Tourism, Law, American, and Okinawan studies and Hogen-English Dictionary was published, video conferencing initiated. President Morita Moshin, VP Kakazu Hiroshi, Professors Shimabukuro Tetsuo, Yamazato Katsunori, Nakahodo Masanori, and Machida Munehiro, were instrumental in these projects. 1st Worldwide Uchinanchu Conference In 2003 about 2,000 people came from outside Hawaii to attend the 1st Worldwide Uchinanchu Conference co-sponsored by the Hawaii Okinawa Kenjinkai and WUB Hawaii. It is the first time that Uchinanchus worldwide gathered together outside of Okinawa, demonstrating the strong spirit of the Worldwide Uchinanchu Network. The 2nd Worldwide Uchinanchu Conference will be in Brazil 2008.
